Position description

The Department of Pediatrics, Division of General Pediatrics at McGill University invites applicants for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as an academic clinician, at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Clinical). The rank will be determined according to the chosen candidates’ qualifications and experience. This position is a contract faculty position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Pediatrics is a leader in academic medicine, and our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) is one of McGill major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. The MCH is a 150-bed hospital with a 12- bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, plus an 8-bed step down unit, a 52- bed Neonatal Intensive Care unit, and 60 Pediatric Medicine inpatient beds. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH.

The Division of General Pediatrics currently has 40 members working in diverse areas including: Inpatient pediatrics, Newborn medicine, Complex care, Medical day hospital, Northern & Indigenous child health, and others. In addition to full-service tertiary care, the Division’s members have proven academic strengths in multiple fields such as medical education, epidemiology, health services and quality improvement research, as well as knowledge translation research.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will have a principal role in the Pediatric Complex Care Service as an active physician member of the Division of General Pediatrics, at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, MUHC.

The Complex Care Team, comprised of 7 MDs, works with a multidisciplinary team of nurse case managers, care coordinators and allied health professionals to provide comprehensive care to over 500 medically complex, fragile and/or technology dependent children and adolescents. In addition, the candidate will work in the Intermediate Complexity Coordination and Navigation Service (I-CCAN) which provides pediatric consultant care and care navigation services. Both services have won awards for innovation and quality of care with ample opportunity for academic development in education or research.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute as a full member of the Division of General Pediatrics, with an expert focus on pediatric complex care. Applicants are required to be eligible for licensure and to practice within the province of Quebec. A working knowledge of both English and French is required.

The career profile of the successful candidate includes the following:

  1. Clinical Work (0.75 FTE): The focus of clinical work will be in Pediatric Complex Care Service with additional responsibilities in the Division of General Pediatrics

  2. Research/Academic (0.25 FTE): Participation in departmental and divisional academic activities such as research, teaching, quality improvement, and program development is required. Two priority areas include Clinical Research and Curriculum Development

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

  • hold an meidcal degree or equivalent

  • have completed postgraduate clinical training in Pediatrics, and have completed specialty training with certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent)

  • have either certification, or equivalent clinical experience, in Pediatric Complex Care

  • hold or be eligible for licensure to practice medicine from the Collège des médecins du Québec

  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.
