BCCH is the main pediatrics clinical training site for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and conducts research to advance health and knowledge through the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR), and collaborations with other institutions.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) & BC Children’s Hospital are seeking a Division Head to provide leadership to the clinical and academic services of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The Emergency Department serves almost 49,000 children per year and provides an outstanding environment for clinical research and teaching of learners from multiple healthcare disciplines. The BCCH ED has more than 50 acute and fast-track beds including 2 state-of-the-art trauma / resuscitation rooms, specialized procedure rooms, and a dedicated mental wellness area.
The Emergency Department is staffed by subspecialists in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, including 25 members of the Children’s Hospital Emergency Physicians Association Practice Plan who have completed a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship + 19 Float Pool members who are trained in PEM or Emergency Medicine. We pride ourselves in having an interdisciplinary approach to children in need of emergent care, and the physicians work closely with Divisional nurses, mental health nurses, respiratory therapists, child-life specialists, social workers, and administrative staff as well as hospital pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists.
The Children’s Hospital Emergency Physicians Associates (CHEPA) is a formal democratic group of Pediatric Emergency Physicians that provides clinical service to the Emergency Department of BCCH, and is dedicated to excellence in clinical care, research, and education. A fully equipped state-of-the-art simulation center within the hospital and the UBC Centre for Health Educational Scholarship (CHES) present opportunities for growth and development of faculty interested in educational research, while the BCCHR supports opportunities for the clinician scholar.
The Division Head position comprises part of a dyadic leadership structure and works closely with the ED Medical Director. The Division Head is primarily an outward-facing role and is responsible for relationships between and among divisions and the hospital executive leadership while the medical director role is primarily inward-facing, though specific responsibilities of each role are negotiable. The Division Head is responsible for fostering the wellness and professional development of the pediatric emergency medicine team and ensuring the delivery of the academic mission, including promoting research and providing a safe learning environment.
As the successful candidate for the Division Head position, you will have demonstrated a commitment to academic and clinical excellence in emergency medicine and have the demonstrated leadership and management skills to ensure high quality clinical service and academic productivity. You will encourage a multidisciplinary collaborative teamwork and support an equitable, diverse, and inclusive vision for pediatric emergency medicine, support growth and career development all while promoting patient safety in a family centered environment.
Applicants for this position must have passed or be eligible for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in Pediatrics or comparable qualifications and will have completed a recognized training program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Applicants must be eligible for a specialist license, as determined by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
UBC Clinical Faculty Rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
